ToggleSituated on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, La Alpujarra which was the last Moorish refuge in Spain, is a perfect blend of architecture, landscape and a haven of peace and tranquillity. The tour begins in Lanjarón, famous for its mineral water and spa. The road continues in the direction of Orgiva with its 17th century Church and a library which houses the biggest collection of Don Quixote versions in the world. Travelling through chestnut and pine tree groves we come to Alpujarra Alta and Poqueira Ravine. A visit to Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira is strongly recommended. These picturesque villages are famous for their gastronomy, handicrafts and art museums. There are many opportunities for hiking in this area. The towns of Capileira, Pitres and Trevélez, which, at 1476 metres, is the highest town in Spain, are famous for their cured ham (jamón serrano). The return trip via Cádiar and Torvizcón follows a scenic route.
20 minutes from Salobreña is the turn off for the Valley, where you will discover the fertile valley of Lecrín. The location of its villages and the agricultural techniques are a heritage from the Muslim history of these lands, where orange and lemon groves fill the air with a heady perfume of orange blossom in springtime. From September to December walking through this countryside full of oranges and lemons is an incredible experience. The almond tree blossoming in late January and February is an explosion of beauty and colour that you must see with your own eyes.
Talará, Melegís, Chite, Albuñuelas, Cozvíjar, Nigüelas, Durcal or Padul, are some of its villages.
Here you will find old mills, Muslim castles, Christian manor houses and charming country cottages spotting the tranquil and luminous valley.
