Eight surprising spaces in Granada’s geography not far from Salobreña
Salobreña enjoys a privileged location in Granada province. From this Andalusian white town close to the Mediterranean Sea -but with a subtropical climate-, you can reach mountain landscapes in 40 minutes driving distance, and even Sierra Nevada ski resort and Natural Park only 60 minutes driving distance from Salobrena beaches.

1. El Jardín Nazarí de Vélez
Just 19 kilometres far from Salobreña you can visit Vélez de Benaudalla Moorish gardens. Lovers of the flora, vegetation and the beauty of historic gardens will find here an exceptional example of the Hispano-Moorish garden which the Moors left as a legacy. This unique space maintains its original structure, adapted to the land, illustrates a delicate harmony between natural and built elements designed expressly to delight the “senses”.

2. Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Nature Reserve
25 kilometres far from Salobreña get to Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Nature Reserve. Its is a spectacular section of coast formed by abrupt cliffs which alternate with beaches an small coves. Its marine bottom has caverns
and rocky outcroppings which are home to many species of marine fauna. Walk along coastline from Cantarrijan beach to Caleta Watchtower, or Cerro Gordo cliffs from Mirador Restaurant for a great coastal view. A boat ride allows to visitors approach these inaccesible places of great beauty. During the journey you can also see dolphins jumping as they cross the Mediterranean. This is one of Spains most requested scuba diving destinations.

3. El Barranco del Río Poqueira
Alpujarra Granadan villages are 50 kilometres far from Salobreña, but this distance depends of the village visited. From the Poqueira Gorge Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira can be seen: they haven been collectively declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
Pampaneira is a town made up of stacks of houses with grey “terraos’, the name given to the roofs of the houses topped off with a special type of clay known locally as ‘launa’. Bubión is known for its washing places, built in 1945. Capileira is the most brightly lit village in the Gorge, as it is the village that gets the most hours of sun. From this point Pampaneira, Bubión and Pico del Veleta can be seen.
La Alpujarra’s grastronomy is very famous too: cured ham is the best local Alpujarra dish. The so-called plato alpujarreño (literally: “the dish of La Alpujarra”) consists of fried potatoes with onion and peppers, fried eggs, ham, sausage, black pudding, and fried peppers. You can also try the typical Moorish sweet pastries, the fried doughnuts or roscos from Pampaneira. In Bubión you can taste the typical dishes of the region and the famous cured hams and pork products. The best cuisine on offer in Capileira are the famous pucheros, guisos, migas and gachas, as well as the range of homemade sweet pastries from the village.
Trevélez gorge is another option. Trevélez is the highest village in Andalusia. Both ravines are places for repeated visits by fans of the sport of canyoning, hiking or cyclists, because it is part of the transnevada cycle route.

4. Bermejales reservoir
89 kilometres far from Salobreña is the Bermejales reservoir. It is surrounded by forests of pine, Holm oak and Mediterranean shrubs. Practice water sports such as sailing, canoeing or paddle boating. Book kayak rentals and activities at SurAventura or Camping Los Bermejales.
5. Las Peñas de los Gitanos
In the town of Montefrío and 108 kilometres from Salobreña, Las Peñas de los Gitanos are a natural landscape defined as abrupt lines of limestone amongst Mediterranean forest of Holm oak and shrubs. An Iberian necropolis and a Visigoth Cementery hides more than one hundred of megalithic sepulchres.

6. Hells of Loja
Natural Monument Hells of Loja is just 112 kilometres far from Salobreña. It belongs to the town of Loja. It is fomed by cascades and waterfalls coming one after the other among leafy exuberant riparian vegetation. The landscape has been declared a Natural Monument and its enviroment is well equipped for leisure and recreation.

7. Marchal Gullies
130 far from our town you can find the Marchal Gullies: bandlands and desert, red-cliff canyons, amazing sceneries. Hollywood filming industry tried to capture the beauty and personality of these geological landscapes and deserts: “Indiana Jones
and the Last Crusade” or “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, and many other spaguetti western productions were filmed around this locations. The area belongs to Granada Geopark tour.
8. Megalithic Park of Gorafe
This is the farthest point in our list: it is 153 kilometres far from Salobreña. The unique Megalithic Park of Gorafe means the first European settlers over 5,000 years ago. It is one of the most important funeral complex in Europe:more than 204 dolmens dated between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
