Part of the uniqueness of Salobreña lies in its natural environment of subtropical plantations accessible by country roads and pathways which allow the visitor to appreciate the wide variety of botanical species. Camino del Canal road, Camino de Lobres path and Camino del Gambullon Pathways are short easy walks which allow the visitor to observe at closehand the custard-apple, mango, avocado and papaya plantations and have the opportunity to take in panoramic views of the valley and Salobreña. CUSTARD APPLE WALK. Leaving Salobrena on the way to Sport complex, we walk into the plain. Passed the main sport complex wall and arch turn lef taking the dirt track. This route allous us to see the fields of sugar cane and exotic frutios, such as cheriyoa, avocadoes, papayas. The route gets to 100 metres above sea level before joining Canino del Canal pathway, wich affords magnificentes views of the floodplain , the wone itsef and the sea as it takes us towards the Monte Almendros residentila Area. We then cross the N-340 road near tl La Caleta to arrive, just facing the sea at Guardia and Salobreña beach.
About custard apple. Its flavour is deliciously sweet; it tends towards pineapple, or maybe strawberry, or even banana flavours; it is unique and brings tropical flavours to mind when we taste it. The chirimoya or custard apple originated in Central America and Peru and is considered by many botanists to be one of the three best fruits in the world. Haenke, the naturalist, considered the custard apple to be ‘one of nature’s masterpieces’. The harvest period is from September to April. Make sure you visit some of the plantations that organize guided tours and fruit and juice tastings.
Mangoes from Salobrena. Together with the custard apple, another of the tropical fruits grown in Salobreña is the mango. The mango tree on the Costa Tropical flowers twice a year. When it blooms in January the flowers must be removed since optimum flowering temperature will not be reached in this month and fruit setting will be unsuccessful. The second and definitive mango bloom takes place in May, as during this month ideal temperatures are reached for the success and growth of the fruit. The harvest period is between September and December.
This route allows us to explore the typical agricultural landscape of Salobrena’s floodplain. Beginning at the Mediterranean avenue, we then follow a track leading to the Camino del Molino path which in turn passes through fields growing tropical fruits (loquads, custard apples) and also vegetable crops as tomatoes, beens, potatoes. Arriving at the path knows as the Camino del Molino, we continue on our way to the rivermouth, then, following the bank of the river Guadalfeo towards the north. Take the dirt track under the main road, then turn left to the sport complex where the route comes to an end.
